Emergency Alert System Test

Why Will The President Be Texting You?

Majority of cell phones in America will receive an emergency alert from the President on October 3, 2018. This message will be a test of the Emergency Alert System and Wireless Emergency Alerts (WEA), which allows the standing President to address the entire nation during times of natural disaster or a terrorist threat.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) will conduct the test in hopes to be able to assess the readiness of the alert systems and make necessary improvements to the infrastructure.

WEA compatible cell phones that are switched on, within ranges of a cell tower and whose wireless provider participates in WEA should receive a test message between 2:00 and 2:30pm. There is no way to opt out of these alerts. The alert will read:

“PRESIDENTIAL ALERT: THIS IS A TEST of the National Emergency Alert System. No action is needed.”

The alert was originally scheduled for September 20, 2018; however, it was postponed until October 3, 2018 due to Hurricane Florence relief efforts.
